Roy Hodgson has announced his resignation as England manager after his side suffered a shock 2-1 loss to Iceland in the UEFA EURO 2016 round of 16.
Appointed in May 2012, the former Inter Milan and Liverpool boss revealed his decision shortly after the final whistle in Nice on Monday, where goals from Ragnar Sigurdsson and Kolbeinn Sigthórsson had taken Iceland through to a quarter-final meeting with France in Saint-Denis on 3 July.
"I'm extremely disappointed about tonight's result and ultimately our exit from the competition," Hodgson said at the post-match press conference. "We haven't progressed as far as I'd thought we were capable of and ultimately it is not acceptable.
"I'd have loved to stay on for another two years," the 68-year-old added. "However, I am pragmatic and know we are in the results business. My contract was always up after the EURO so now is the time for someone else to oversee the progress of this young, hungry and extremely talented group. They have been fantastic and have done everything that has been asked of them.
"These things happen. I can only hope that we will see an England team in the final of a major tournament very soon," concluded the ex-Switzerland, Fulham and West Brom coach.
