Experienced German trainer Christoph Daum has been appointed Romania coach on a two-year deal.
Daum, five times a domestic champion – once in Germany (Stuttgart), three times in Turkey (Beşiktaş and Fenerbahçe twice) and once in Austria (Austria Wien) – has never been at the helm of a national team. His contract with the Romanian Football Federation (FRF) could be extended by a further two years should the side qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
"I am happy to be here," said the 62-year-old. "It is an honour and responsibility for me to give my best for the Romanian national team. In order to achieve success we need to show a united front. Teamwork and belief are important. Let's stick together when times are tough."
Romania, who finished bottom of their UEFA EURO 2016 group, will play Poland, Denmark, Montenegro, Armenia and Kazakhstan in World Cup qualifying.
