Azzurri opening for Lanna

Giovanni Trapattoni has called AC Chievo Verona defender Salvatore Lanna into the Italy squad.

AC Chievo Verona defender Salvatore Lanna has been called into the Italy squad for the EURO 2004™ qualifying matches against Yugoslavia and Wales.

Chievo milestone
Coach Giovanni Trapattoni turned to the 26-year-old Lanna after Mark Iuliano and Alessandro Nesta sat out training today with flu and toothache respectively. If Lanna plays in Naples or Cardiff he will become the third Chievo player in less than a year to represent the Azzurri following the debuts of Andrea Marazzina and Thomas Manfredini.

Injury crisis
Trapattoni is experiencing something of an injury crisis ahead of the Group 9 meeting with Yugoslavia at the San Paolo stadium on Saturday and Wales the following Wednesday. His attacking options are limited by the absence of Christian Vieri and Francesco Totti, while defenders Marco Materazzi and Francesco Coco are also sidelined with injuries.
