Völler plays it safe

Germany coach Rudi Völler has resisted pressure to recall Fredi Bobic for the friendly against the Dutch.

Germany coach Rudi Völler pulled a couple of surprises in announcing a 20-man squad for the friendly international against the Netherlands next Wednesday in Gelsenkirchen.

No Bobic
Fredi Bobic, who has scored eight goals in eight games for Hannover 96, had been tipped for a recall, but in the event he did not make the cut.

Ziege back
The party contains 18 players who went to the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan, the exceptions being Paul Freier of VfL Bochum 1848 and Hertha BSC Berlin's Arne Friedrich. Tottenham Hotspur FC's Christian Ziege, BV Borussia Dortmund midfield player Lars Ricken and Frank Baumann of SV Werder Bremen have been recalled, although Christoph Metzelder misses out through injury.

Sold out
All 60,601 tickets for the match at the AufSchalke Arena were sold weeks ago for the eagerly-awaited friendly. Germany are currently top of UEFA EURO 2004™ Group Five with six points from two games. Their next qualifier is against Lithuania on 29 March 2003.

Germany squad
Kahn, Lehmann, Baumann, Friedrich, Kehl, Ramelow, Rehmer, Ziege, Ballack, Böhme, Frings, Hamann, Jeremies, Ricken, Schneider, Asamoah, Freier, Jancker, Klose, Neuville.
