Tomasson fires Denmark to victory

European champions Greece were defeated while Denmark were one of a number of UEFA EURO 2008™ hopefuls to taste victory in Tuesday night's friendlies.

Australia 1-3 Denmark
Villarreal CF's Jon Dahl Tomasson struck twice as Denmark comfortably beat Australia at Queens Park Rangers FC's stadium in London. Tomasson put the European side ahead with a sweet 25-metre strike after just four minutes, then laid on the second for Daniel Jensen in the 27th minute. Dennis Rommedahl provided Tomasson with a tap-in ten minutes later before Australia scored a consolation with five minutes remaining through a Brett Emerton free-kick.

Bulgaria 2-0 Latvia
Hristo Stoichkov's men won the opening game of the four-team friendly tournament in Cyprus thanks to a flying start against Latvia. Bulgaria took the lead after 18 minutes when Latvia defender Pavels Surnins put the ball into his own net from a Zoran Janković cross. Fifteen minutes later Hristo Yovov doubled the advantage when he was allowed too much space and his shot gave goalkeeper Aleksandrs Kolinko no chance. Marian Hristov played his first game for Bulgaria since September 2004, while Dimitar Berbatov was rested.

Cyprus 2-1 Hungary
Cyprus also managed a victory over Hungary in Limassol to reach the final of the four-team event. The hosts' early pressure paid off on 18 minutes when Yiannis Okkas provided Yiasoumi Yiasoumis with an easy tap-in. Hungary almost equalised as Béla Balogh's effort hit the crossbar but Cyprus came back at the visitors in the second half and eventually doubled their lead - Efstathios Aloneftis feeding Okkas who converted from close range. Tamás Priskin pulled a goal back on 89 minutes but it was too late to stop Cyprus.

Greece 0-1 Korea Republic
The European title-holders were defeated by Korea Republic at Fulham FC, in another friendly played in London. Lee Chun Soo's 77th-minute free-kick proved the difference between the sides, after Greece had struck the woodwork earlier in the second half with a Stylianos Giannakopoulos header. This was Greece's last match before next month's key UEFA European Championship qualifier against Turkey in Athens.

Lithuania 1-3 Mali
All four goals came in the first half as Mali had too much fire power for Lithuania in a friendly in Paris. Midfielder Adama Tamboura opened the scoring for Mali after 21 minutes only for Edgaras Jankauskas to level seven minutes later. Mali wrapped up the win before the interval, with Real Madrid CF midfielder Mahamadou Diarra and striker Mamadou Diallo netting in the 30th and 43rd minutes respectively.

Northern Ireland 0-0 Wales
The United Kingdom rivals played out a goalless draw at Windsor Park in Belfast, a result due in no small part to the absence of attacking talent on both sides. Wales were dealt a blow before kick-off when Manchester United FC's Ryan Giggs pulled out with a muscle injury while Northern Ireland were shorn of their record goalscorer David Healy.
