Duo to take EURO chance

The Polish and Ukrainian FA presidents promised a tournament to remember in 2012.

Polish Football Association president Michał Listkiewicz spoke "on behalf of 85 million people" when assuring UEFA and football supporters that his country and co-hosts Ukraine will "do everything" to ensure the 2012 UEFA European Championship is a huge success.

Heading east
Having fought off competition from Italy and Croatia/Hungary to be awarded the prestigious tournament in Cardiff today, Listkiewicz said: "These have been the best bids in the history of this tournament, and I'd like to congratulate all of the countries. I cordially invite all of you to Ukraine and Poland, on behalf of 85 million people who are waiting for this big football event, which is finally going to the east. Finally we have this chance."

'Milestone'
He continued: "I would like to thank everyone who supported us and trusted us, we promise that we will do everything we have promised to UEFA and European football fans. The friendship between Poland and Ukraine has a very long history, and this tournament will be a milestone in our common history."

'Overwhelmed'
Listkiewicz was joined on stage at the City Hall in the Welsh capital by his Football Federation of Ukraine counterpart Grigoriy Surkis, who said: "It is very hard for me to describe the emotions I feel at the moment - I am overwhelmed. For three years we have committed our hearts to this and there are so many people who have been involved in our efforts. This is a fantastic chance that we have been given and will do our best to do it justice. Believe in us, we will do it!"
