Keane calls it quits for Ireland

Manchester United FC midfield player Roy Keane will not play for the Republic of Ireland again.

Kerr in charge
The 31-year-old has not played for his country since falling out with former Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy at the 2002 FIFA World Cup finals. Keane was sent home from the pre-tournament training camp. McCarthy has since resigned and been replaced by Brian Kerr.

Medical advice
"I did express a desire to play international football again," said Keane in a statement issued to RTE, Ireland's state television service. "But after discussing the matter with [United manager] Alex Ferguson and my wife as well as unequivocal advice from medics, I have decided to step down from international football."

Support given
He added: "I'm extremely grateful for all the support I've received in recent months and I'm deeply sorry that I'm unable to play again for my country. The team is in very good hands with Brian Kerr in charge."

Not included
Keane, who made his international debut in 1991 and has 58 caps, was not included when Kerr named his first squad last week for tomorrow's friendly match against Scotland. However, Kerr revealed today that Keane had told him last week he hoped to play again only to change his mind following a consultation with United's medical staff.

Decision accepted
"Roy called me to tell me that he had made a decision not to return to play for the Republic of Ireland, that he had discussed it with his family and he was disappointed to have to tell me that," said Kerr. "I accepted his decision and wished him the best of luck in his career with Manchester United."

Shearer example
Speculation had been rife that Keane, who has seen his career blighted by serious injuries including knee and hip problems, would announce his international retirement, with Sir Alex reportedly urging his captain to follow the lead of former England forward Alan Shearer. The striker has seen his club career at Newcastle United FC flourish since standing down from the national team after EURO 2000™. Keane's last game for his country was in a 2-1 friendly defeat at home by Nigeria last May.
