UEFA confirms Liechtenstein match to go ahead

Liechtenstein's UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifier with England will go ahead.

Safeguards in place
Discussions this afternoon have resulted in the clear understanding of what will be provided by the Liechtenstein authorities and UEFA is satisfied that the necessary safeguards will be in place.

Official confirmation
This was confirmed by Mike Lee, UEFA's director of communications and public affairs, who said: "Today the assurances on safety and security arrangements required by UEFA have been given by the Liechtenstein authorities. The match with England is to go ahead as scheduled." The Group 7 qualifying match will now go ahead as scheduled at the Rheinpark stadium in Vaduz on Saturday at 18.30CET.

Talks finished
Representatives of European football's governing body and officials from the Liechtenstein Football Association (LFV) and the principality's authorities had been holding talks about whether the match could go ahead amid security concerns caused by the outbreak of hostilities in Iraq.

Security worries
The LFV was concerned about security at the match. There had been fears in the small principality, which lies between Switzerland and Austria, of possible anti-war demonstrations to coincide with the game, and the availability of a sufficient police presence at the match.
