Belgium earn win bonus

Belgium secured a confidence-inspiring win in Brussels, defeating Poland 3-1 in tonight's friendly international.

Sonck on song
Belgium have been in uncertain form since the 2002 FIFA World Cup. However, KRC Genk striker Wesley Sonck carried his prolific club form on to the international stage, opening the scoring three minutes before the half-hour mark.

Decisive third
It was 2-0 ten minutes into the second period, as Feyenoord midfield player Thomas Buffel doubled the home side's lead. Although Jacek Krzynowek gave Poland hope when he halved the deficit nine minutes from time, a third goal from forward Tom Soetaers four minutes later sealed Belgium's win.

Poor start
Belgium have endured a slow start to their qualification campaign for UEFA EURO 2004™, and are currently third in Group 8. Their campaign began with a 2-0 defeat at home by Bulgaria followed by 1-0 victories away to both Andorra and Estonia. However, the Belgians then suffered a resounding 4-0 reverse against Croatia in Zagreb last time out. Coach Aimé Anthuenis will hope that tonight's win will reinvigorate his side ahead of the crucial return match with leaders Bulgaria in Sofia on 7 June.

Poland second
Poland have also had problems since their disappointing World Cup campaign, and currently lie second in Group 4 with seven points from four matches. Group leaders Latvia moved three points clear at the top of the table with a 3-0 win against San Marino tonight. Poland next travel to Solna to play Sweden on 11 June.
