Pokrivač thrilled by internet dream

Uncapped midfielder Nikola Pokrivač has revealed that he learned of his inclusion in Slaven Bilić's Croatia squad for UEFA EURO 2008™ while on the internet.

The 22-year-old, who plays his club football for AS Monaco FC, had been touted as for a call-up to the 23-man party, but did not want to build his hopes up until he received confirmation for himself. Pokrivač left NK Dinamo Zagreb for the Ligue 1 club in the January transfer window, having previously played all his football in Croatia's Prva Liga. 

'Dream come true'
"There was talk saying I was on the list for EURO, but I didn't want to celebrate before I saw it personally," said Pokrivač. "I was connected to the internet and was waiting for the happy news on the day when Bilić named the team. It's the best thing that has happened in my career. My dream came true. I was hoping I could earn a call to the national team, but to be in the team for EURO..."

Versatile
Although primarily a defensive midfielder, Bilić may use Pokrivač at left-back having previously played there for NK Varteks. "He is, in the first place, a candidate for left-back," said Bilić. "Not only can he do that, but he has already played there at NK Varteks before he proved himself in the defensive midfielder position."

'Honoured'
Pokrivač, though, is simply delighted to have received the call regardless of where he ends up playing. "I can play as a defensive midfielder, also at left-back, or even as a central defender," he added. "My strength is having a good left foot. I am honoured to be on the list for EURO, but I also hope I can get a few minutes on the pitch".
