Changes for EURO 2004™ hopefuls

Iceland and Wales have both made adjustments to their squads for Wednesday's UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifiers.

Roberts call-up
Having been deprived of the services of forward John Hartson and defender Andy Melville, Wales manager Mark Hughes has brought Wigan Athletic FC striker Neil Roberts into his squad to face Serbia and Montenegro in Group 9. Wales visit the FK Crvena Zvezda stadium with a two-point lead over Italy at the top of the section - and this is their game in hand on the Azzurri.

Sigurdsson doubt
Iceland could go top of Group 5 if they beat the Faroe Islands on Wednesday. With doubts still existing over the fitness of defender Larus Sigurdsson, coach Asgeir Sigurvinsson has called Stoke City FC defender Petur Marteinsson into his squad as cover.

Hargreaves withdrawal
Several of the European countries in friendly action this week are also suffering from injury problems. FC Bayern München midfield player Owen Hargreaves has pulled out of the England squad for Wednesday's match against Croatia due to a groin injury. Hargreaves was injured playing for his club at the weekend and he flew back to Germany on Monday after being assessed by England's medical staff.

Upson in as cover
England coach Sven-Göran Eriksson has a number of other injury concerns, including captain David Beckham, who has a back injury sustained playing for Real Madrid CF in a pre-season friendly, Emile Heskey, Jonathan Woodgate and Sol Campbell. Matthew Upson of Birmingham City FC has been added to the squad as defensive cover.

Italian injuries
Italy defender Alessandro Nesta and midfield player Cristiano Zanetti have both suffered slight muscle injuries and have left the Azzurri's training camp ahead of Wednesday's friendly against Germany in Stuttgart. Coach Giovanni Trapattoni will not call up other players to replace the missing duo.

Maloney reward
Celtic FC striker Shaun Maloney has been rewarded for his impressive form at club level by earning his first Scotland call-up for Wednesday's friendly in Norway. The 20-year-old was promoted from the Under-21s by manager Berti Vogts after Motherwell FC winger James McFadden and Rangers FC striker Steven Thompson pulled out through injury. Maloney's Celtic team-mate Jackie McNamara has also withdrawn from the match in Oslo because of a stomach bug.

Colgan set for debut
Finally, goalkeeper Nicky Colgan will make his full debut for the Republic of Ireland in their friendly international against Australia tonight after manager Brian Kerr decided to rest usual No1 Shay Given. Kerr will be without Steven Reid and Lee Carsley for the Dublin match.
