Eren Derdiyok will miss a considerable chunk of Switzerland's UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying campaign with a serious knee injury.

The striker ruptured a cruciate ligament in his right knee while training with his new club Kasımpaşa SK and is expected to be sidelined for around seven months. That rules the 26-year-old out of the Nati's first four Group E fixtures, the first of which is against England on 8 September.

The setback comes after Derdiyok, a scorer of eight goals in 46 international appearances, was omitted from his country's FIFA World Cup squad by previous coach Ottmar Hitzfeld. Switzerland, now under the guidance of Vladimir Petković, are in a qualifying section along with England, Estonia, Lithuania, San Marino and Slovenia.

Formerly of hometown club FC Basel 1893, Bayer 04 Leverkusen and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, Derdiyok signed for Istanbul side Kasımpaşa in May.
