The run; the technique; the trajectory – as iconic goals go, Karel Poborský's scoop in the quarter-finals of EURO '96 ticks plenty of boxes.

It was eight minutes into the second half of the Czech Republic's last-eight meeting with Portugal at Villa Park when Poborský assumed possession 30 metres from goal. Even after evading three defenders, the mop-haired winger had still only advanced as far as the penalty area and had Oceano and Vítor Baía between him and the goal. It mattered not, though, for one exquisite flick of his boot was enough.

"I like to remember the goal, and people often speak to me about it," Poborský told UEFA.com. "It was the most beautiful goal of my career – it helped me to get onto the big stage, even though the fans already knew me in England. I am really honoured that this goal has been chosen to appear in such a prestigious selection.

"I did not practise this kind of finish in training, so it could not have been planned. It came into my head spontaneously because of the situation that faced me. I have to admit I was a bit lucky that the ball bounced back to me when I was trying to beat three opponents. I appeared one-on-one with the goalkeeper despite still being outside the area and then this finish came to me. It seemed the easiest solution!"
