Kakhaber Tskhadadze has been appointed Georgia coach in succession to Temuri Ketsbaia.

The former Georgia captain has signed a two-and-a-half year contract but will work for free until June, when he will relinquish his position as coach of Azerbaijani title challengers İnter Bakı PİK. He replaces Ketsbaia, who stepped down last month with Georgia having managed only three points in four UEFA EURO 2016 qualifiers.

Tskhadadze, who represented the Commonwealth of Independent States at EURO ’92, said: "I trust the lads and want to tell them they're great and capable of winning and qualifying for major tournaments.”

Loss to Poland: Ketsbaia's farewell

The former Manchester City FC and Eintracht Frankfurt defender has won league titles in Georgia and Azerbaijan as a coach, aiding İnter to the championship in his first full season of 2009/10. Tskhadadze will start his reign with a 23 March friendly against Malta, six days before his competitive bow at home to Germany.

The father of İnter and Georgia forward Bachana Tskhadadze, the 46-year-old added: "Being head of your national team is the biggest job you can get as a coach, a dream for anyone. I'm glad I'll have a chance to contribute to football's development in my country."
