What to watch out for in Tuesday's EURO qualifiers

Resurgent Spain out to press advantage
The European champions scratched a nagging itch when they beat Slovakia 2-0 on Saturday, that success eclipsing their 2-1 defeat in Zilina earlier in the campaign – their only defeat in their last 21 away qualifiers – and putting them top of the section on head-to-head record. Jordi Alba felt the Slovakia performance was "90 fantastic minutes" but warned that another 90 might be necessary in Skopje, the section's bottom side eager to raise their game.

Slovakia eager to make amends
Slovakia's 100% start in Group C came to an abrupt halt with that 2-0 reverse in Oviedo yet there is little time to brood. Against Ukraine, with whom they share 97km of border, Ján Kozák's side have the chance to confirm a first UEFA European Championship qualification – and second major finals appearance, having made their FIFA World Cup breakthrough in 2010. A 1-0 win in Ukraine earlier in the campaign means victory here would secure a top-two finish on head-to-head record.

Belarus deflated, Luxembourg on the up
Losing to Ukraine on Saturday put a definitive end to Belarus's hopes of reaching the finals, but Aleksandr Khatskevich's team may be concerned about insult being added to injury as they welcome a Luxembourg side who lifted themselves off the foot of the section with a 2-1 triumph over FYR Macedonia. A fourth-placed finish is suddenly a possibility for the visitors, coach Luc Holtz saying: "We'll try to continue to get more points, in Belarus and also against Slovakia."

Can Switzerland dazzle again?
Roy Hodgson faces his old employers knowing England are already through, while the Swiss could join them in France with a first win in ten away games against England – provided Slovenia draw with Estonia. Not a likely outcome, yet after they came from 2-0 down to beat Slovenia with three goals in the last ten minutes last time out, there is magic in the air for Switzerland. However, Wayne Rooney needs just one goal to hit 50 for England – and set a new national record. With the pressure off, this could be his moment.

Slovenia and Estonia dream on
These teams met in their first FIFA-recognised post-independence fixture in June 1992. Back in the here-and-now present, Estonia leapfrogged Slovenia into third on Saturday, enabling coach Magnus Pehrsson to hail "the best squad of my time in charge", and victory in Maribor would open up huge possibilities. A home win, meanwhile, would give Slovenia a slightly better chance of dislodging the Swiss from their current runners-up slot, since – unlike Estonia – they do not have to play England again.

Lithuania seek solace
"We'll try to win the next match against San Marino, obviously, and then see what our aim is for our final qualifiers," shrugged Lithuania coach Igoris Pankratjevas, a little deflated after Saturday's 1-0 loss to Baltic rivals Estonia. He can afford to be optimistic: San Marino have lost their last 34 competitive away fixtures without scoring, their last away goal coming in a 1-1 draw with Latvia in April 2001.

Group G
Sweden in need of Austria success
Unbeaten in 14 home qualifiers, Sweden have to keep that positive run going as they welcome section leaders Austria, Saturday's 1-0 reverse in Moscow leaving Russia with designs on the Swedes' current second place in the section. One more point will send Austria to France, and while Sweden coach Erik Hamrén played down the implications of Zlatan Ibrahimović potentially being out injured, a draw would not suit his side at all.

Russia back from the dead
The 1-0 success against Sweden in Leonid Slutski's first game in charge was a massive result for Russia. "It felt like Russia rose from their coffin," wrote Sport-Express. Victory in Liechtenstein would all but guarantee a play-off berth for a team that has underperformed in Group G, yet – with an uncomplicated run-in – stealing an automatic slot for UEFA EURO 2016 must be on Slutski's mind.

Hope lingers for Montenegro
"Our chances of reaching the EURO are not great, but anything is possible and we won't surrender before the end," said Stevan Jovetić as his side looked ahead to facing Moldova, still to avoid a home defeat in this section. Pinching third position is just about within the realms of possibility for Branko Brnović's men, but this might require a huge last-day win in Russia if the remaining matches go to form.
