Memories of a thrilling UEFA EURO 2008 encounter in Geneva, which ended 3-2, will come flooding back as Turkey take on the Czech Republic eager to get back on track in UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying Group A.
The only competitive meeting between the nations in their current incarnations was at UEFA EURO 2008, where Nihat Kahveci struck twice in the last four minutes to take Fatih Terim's side into the last eight at the expense of Karel Brückner's Czechs. Forward Tuncay Şanlı finished the game in the Turkey goal, with Volkan Demirel dismissed for a foul two minutes into added time.
Semih Kaya, Turkey defender:
Everybody knows how difficult the Czech Republic game will be. We have prepared accordingly. I think we’re well prepared. We started badly with a defeat against Iceland and we are eager to atone for that loss.
I hope every player gives more than his utmost and then the Turkish people can hopefully see a great performance. When the Turkish people are behind us, there’s nothing we can’t achieve. There’s also the Latvia game [on Monday]. If we can get six points in our next two matches, our chances of a place in the finals will dramatically increase.
