"Demons exorcised" read the headline in Goal Newspaper with the Cypriot daily claiming that Cyprus "awoke from her coma and left Zenica with an incredible victory in their opening EURO 2016 qualifier" by winning 2-1 in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Special reference is also made to the fact that Cyprus lasted tasted victory on 11 September 2012 while praise is also heaped on two-goal hero Dimitris Christofi and keeper Antonis Giorgallides, who saved a late penalty.
The back page of Politis newspaper emblazoned the words "Seven years was too long…" over a picture of the Cyprus players ecstatic with joy at the final whistle. The paper goes on to say that the island not only ended its barren spell of 926 minutes without a goal but also saw Cyprus secure a first-ever win away to a bigger qualifying opponent.
Sport Day ran pictures of Christofi, Giorgallides and national team boss Charalampos Christodoulou while the article on page three – entitled "A feat in Bosnia!" featured the comments of Christodoulou and how is calling on the fans to get behind his new team.
Konstantinos Makrides, Cyprus captain
This was a big win and all the players worked hard. Congratulations to everyone in the team and coaching staff. We now look ahead. Bosnia are a great side and they pressured us with their quality and fans.
We were a bit nervous in the beginning but we believed more in the second half. Our equaliser helped us mentally. It is always good to start with a win but our feet are on the ground.
