Austria pushed Brazil all the way but eventually went down 2-1 at home to the five-time world champions in their Vienna friendly. The hosts started brightly in the first half but after the interval David Luiz grabbed the opener from close range following a corner in the 64th minute. 12 minutes later Oscar brought down Andreas Weimann inside the area and Aleksandar Dragovic held his nerves from the spot. However, the South Americans secured the win on the night thanks to a beautiful 20 metre strike from Roberto Firmino into the top right corner.
Austria's all-time top-scorer Toni Polster spoke to Russian newspaper Sport-Express ahead of Saturday's clash in Vienna, and told the paper's readers something they did not want to hear by predicting a home win. "Russia are definitely favourites in this group, but we have improved a lot and we hope to win. This would be brilliant as we play Russia, Montenegro and Sweden away next year," said the ex FK Austria Wien and VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach man.
"Russia have great players who understand each other very well, while we are outsiders. But we still can beat anyone at home. I think Austria will prevail 2-1."
