Hungary deny Denmark third in extra time

Hungary 3-1 Denmark
Denmark came from behind to force extra time but Dezsö Novák's two goals ensured that Hungary finished third at the 1964 finals.

Hungary needed extra time to beat Denmark 3-1 and finish third at the 1964 UEFA European Football Championship.

Defeated by holders Spain in the last four, Hungary were firm favourites for the bronze medal against a Denmark side which had been outclassed by holders the Soviet Union in the semi-finals. Both teams looked set to stick to the script when Ferenc Bene applied the finishing touch to a fine move involving the instrumental Flórián Albert.

The floodgates were expected to open but Denmark clung on before capitalising on Hungarian laxness late on, Kálmán Ihász allowing Carl Bertelsen to reach Ole Sørensen's pass. Hungary finally asserted their authority in extra time, though, Dezsö Novák coming up from the back to score with a penalty and a free-kick.
