Lithuania keep their cool

Faroe Islands 1-3 Lithuania Disciplined Lithuania secure victory with two Igoris Morinas strikes.

Lithuania may no longer be able to qualify for UEFA EURO 2004™, but they secured a first away win in Group 5 as they triumphed 3-1 in the Faroe Islands.

Visitors ahead
The home side were hoping for their second point of the campaign, having lost 3-1 in Scotland on Saturday, but the disciplined visitors went ahead on 22 minutes through an opportunist strike from Igoris Morinas. However, the Faroes were keen to end their programme on a high and levelled the scores against the run of play just before half-time as Súni Olsen found the target with a free-kick.

Lithuania streak ahead
After 12 minutes of the second period, Lithuania were back in front when Morinas scored his second goal after some neat play in the box. Lithuania dominated the rest if the match, but it was with only two minutes left that they sealed victory, Donatas Vencevicius's free-kick removing any doubts.

Coach satisfied
With ten points, Lithuania cannot catch second-placed Iceland due to an inferior head-to-head record, but visiting coach Algimantas Ljubinskas was satisfied with his side's performance.

'A good sign'
He said: "It is a good sign for the team that we managed to keep calm although we conceded a goal just before half-time. I must admit that the only reason we came here was to win, but I am pleased with the way my team played." Lithuania visit Scotland on 11 October and are able to claim third place by winning.

'Easy goals'
Faroe Islands coach Henrik Larsen, whose side scored seven goals from their eight fixtures, said: "I am disappointed to lose 3-1 for the second time in four days. We had a big chance to take the lead early on, but we still have problems putting our chances away. We conceded three easy goals today."
