Bosnia toil for opening win

Bosnia & Herzegovina 2-0 Luxembourg
Two second-half goals give home side first taste of victory.

Bosnia-Herzegovina recorded their first victory in their UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying campaign as goals from Elvir Bolic and Sergej Barbarez secured victory over group minnows Luxembourg.

First win, first goals
The win came after back-to-back defeats for Blaž Sliškovic's side but despite scoring their first two goals of the campaign, they remain in fourth place behind group heavyweights Denmark, Norway and Romania, with Luxembourg pointless and goalless after three matches.

Impressive Besic
The home side dominated at Sarajevo's Olimpijski stadium but were continually denied in the first half by a superb display from Luxembourg goalkeeper Alija Besic. Bosnia's best chance in the opening period fell to Mirsad Bešlija after 14 minutes but his shot struck the post.

Bolic on target
However, the deadlock was finally broken after 53 minutes when Bolic rose highest in the box to head in a fine cross from Elvir Baljic.

Barbarez seals win
The home side had to wait until eleven minutes from time to make sure of the three points when Barbarez capitalised on a mistake from the Luxembourg keeper to fire into the empty net.

Sliškovic praises visitors
Bosnian coach Sliškovic paid tribute to Luxembourg in his post-match assessment. He said: "This was a tough match. We had a lot of chances and the visitors surprised us with the high level of their performance. With these three points we can travel with much more optimism to Copenhagen."

Mistakes punished
Luxembourg coach Allan Simonsen was happy with his side's performance, saying: "I think my players played very well. Our goalkeeper preformed extraordinarily well. In the second half the home side punished two of our mistakes and they deserved the victory."
