Luxembourg end 12-year wait for win

Belarus 0-1 Luxembourg Luxembourg claimed their first competitive win since 1995 after Fons Leweck struck in the 95th minute.

Luxembourg claimed their first competitive victory since 1995 after substitute Fons Leweck struck in the 95th minute for the only goal of the game in Belarus.

Last gasp
As well as being enough to beat Group G rivals Belarus, Leweck's stoppage-time strike ended a run of 55 successive defeats for Luxembourg in European qualifying competitions. Leweck made history by heading in a Daniel Da Mota cross from close range in the dying seconds.

Qualifying joy
Guy Hellers' team had barely looked like securing their first win in a UEFA European Championship or FIFA World Cup qualifier since the 1-0 success in Malta back in September 1995. But Bernd Stange's home side failed to turn a rash of half-chances into a lead in the match in Gomel.

Lame attempts
Andrei Voronkov shot straight at Luxembourg keeper Jonathan Joubert on 23 minutes, before Aleksei Skverniuk sent a wayward effort over. In response, the visitors, who had lost the reverse fixture 2-1 in March, offered only a tame strike by Joël Kitenge. The second half saw no real improvement from either attack, with Belarus unable to take advantage of a couple of corners.

No end product
Increasingly, though, Luxembourg were on the back foot and Benoit Lang was booked on 71 minutes for time-wasting. Yet there was little end product to Belarus's possession despite the promptings of Aleksandr Hleb and company. Joubert did have to deny Maksim Romashchenko's shot from outside the area, but the real goalmouth drama arrived only in stoppage time.
