Landmark buildings in the eight host cities are being illuminated with the tournament logo and slogan as the centrepiece of a programme of events heralding the advent of UEFA EURO 2012.

With the host cities now confirmed – Warsaw, Wroclaw, Poznan and Gdansk in Poland; Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv and Donetsk in Ukraine – all eight are taking the opportunity to celebrate in the wake of the unveiling of the tournament's logo, visual identity and slogan in Kyiv on Monday.

Light spectacles
While concerts and firework displays are among the other events planned as each city stages a two-day celebration, the keynote spectacle is the illumination of some of their most famous buildings, under the guidance of Swiss artist Gerry Hofstetter. Hofstetter's previous works included illuminating Antarctic icebergs in support of the United Nations International Year of Water 2003, and a 2006 project in Egypt where he lit up the likes of the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx as a contribution to the UN International Year of the Desert and Desertification.
