Austria aiming for Azerbaijani success

Austria and Azerbaijan play their second Group A fixtures having started their campaigns with contrasting results: the former defeated Kazakhstan while Azerbaijan conceded six in Germany.

Azerbaijan have yet to win a game against Austria but they will try to draw encouragement from a small improvement in their club sides' fortunes ahead of their UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying Group A encounter.

• Austria's record in two games against Azerbaijan reads W1 D1 L0 (W1 D0 L0 at home).

• The nations first made acquaintances for a 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Vienna on 9 September 2004, when first-half strikes from Martin Stranzl and Roland Kollmann secured the hosts a 2-0 win. The return fixture in Baku finished goalless.

• Austrian and Azerbaijani teams have met six times in the course of three two-legged UEFA club competition ties, all of which ended with the Austrian outfit advancing. A run of five straight victories for the Austrian clubs was nonetheless ended when PFC Neftçi beat SV Ried 2-1 in the second leg of their UEFA Cup first qualifying round tie in 2007/08.
