Estonia stun Serbia in Belgrade

Serbia 1-3 Estonia
Tarmo Kink, Konstantin Vassiljev and an Aleksandar Luković own goal helped the Baltic team to a shock Group C victory.

Estonia recovered from a goal down to register a shock victory against Serbia and leapfrog their hosts into second place in UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying Group C.

Trailing to Nikola Žigić's strike on the hour, Estonia turned the encounter on its head with efforts from Tarmo Kink and Konstantin Vassiljev. An unexpected triumph for the visitors – and unhappy start for new Serbia coach Vladimir Petrović – was confirmed in added time when a misunderstanding between goalkeeper Vladimir Stojković and Aleksandar Luković resulted in the latter scoring an own goal.

It was Serbia who threatened first in the opening period, forcing Sergei Pareiko into two saves in quick succession. Marko Lomić's free-kick brought the FC Tom Tomsk goalkeeper into action and when the ball reached Miloš Krasić on the left, his cross was met by Nemanja Vidić only for Pareiko to somehow keep his team on level terms.

Estonia gave an inkling of what was to come when Sander Puri shot narrowly wide and Sergei Zenjov, from all of five metres, sent an effort straight at Stojković. At the other end Zigić, Milan Jovanović and Gojko Kačar all cleared the crossbar before the break, while Miloš Ninković did likewise in the early stages of the second half.

The opener arrived when Estonia captain Raio Piiroja only cleared Krasić's corner as far as Kuzmanović, whose shot from the centre of the penalty area was deflected in by Zigić. The lead lasted just three minutes, however, as Kink restored parity from 20 metres. Vassiljev completed the turnaround ten minutes later from a similar distance, before Luković rounded off a miserable night for the hosts late on following an unfortunate mix-up with Stojković.
