Lithuania look to shock Spain

Spain beat Lithuania 3-1 in their first home game after their triumphant return from South Africa and will look for a repeat performance away from home in qualifying Group I.

World and European champions Spain beat Lithuania 3-1 in their first home game following their triumphant return from South Africa and will look for a repeat performance away from home in UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying Group I.

Match background
• Darvydas Šernas equalised after Fernando Llorente had opened the scoring for Spain in the second half in Salamanca on 9 October, but Llorente scored a second before a wonderful David Villa strike completed the scoring.

• After the match, Lithuania's Marius Stankevičius – who plays his club football in Spain with Valencia CF – told UEFA.com: "We are a small country where football isn't even the premier sport and yet the way we tried to play made sure that Spain only won by showing why they are the best around right now. Spain hold the ball for so long you are a bit tired when you get it, and even though we played well and tried to come out and attack them it was too difficult."

• Lithuania's record in five games against Spain reads W0 D1 L4 (W0 D1 L1 at home). Šernas's goal in Salamanca was Lithuania's first against the Spanish.

• The sides made their initial introductions in Seville on 24 February 1993 in the first of a pair of 1994 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, with Spain winning 5-0 thanks to goals from Cristóbal, José María Bakero, Aitor 'Txiki' Begiristain, Thomas Christiansen and Adolfo Aldana. Julen Guerrero then scored twice to seal a 2-0 success in the return fixture.

• The teams were pooled together again in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup, but this time the encounters between them proved much closer. They drew 0-0 in Vilnius on 13 October 2004 before Spain prevailed 1-0 in Valencia on 4 June the following year, Albert Luque firing the 68th-minute winner.
