Norway's most successful period came in the 1990s when coach Egil Olsen took them to successive FIFA World Cups, in the United States and France. His replacement, Nils Johan Semb, then steered Norway to their only UEFA European Championship, in Belgium and the Netherlands, where they bowed out early despite beating Spain in their opening game. In his second spell at the helm, Olsen came close to qualifying Norway for UEFA EURO 2012 but they missed out on a play-off spot on goal difference. Fourth place was a disappointing outcome in an inviting 2014 World Cup qualifying group.

Norway did not begin life in the UEFA European Championship particularly well, losing both their matches against Austria in qualification for the 1960 tournament. Since then, they have come close to qualifying several times but managed to do so only once, in 2000, when the highlight was a 1-0 win against Spain in Rotterdam. Two late Spain goals in the last group game against Yugoslavia denied Norway a place in the quarter-finals.

Norway did reach the play-offs for UEFA EURO 2004, where Spain proved too strong, while a home defeat at the hands of Turkey ended their quest for a place at the 2008 finals. 'Drillo' Olsen returned as coach, but UEFA EURO 2012 was another near miss, defeat in Portugal and picking up just one point from two meetings with Denmark proving to be their downfall.

A Steffen Iversen header earned Norway a famous win, but it was not enough to progress.

Victory in Riga capped a perfect campaign on the road, with five straight away wins.

05/06/1991: Norway 2-1 Italy, EURO '92 qualifying
Goals from Tore André Dahlum and Lars Roar Bohinen hinted at Norway's future success.

Olsen was also an expert in geography, and wrote a book about geographical trivia, 'Drillos Verden' (Drillo's World), which was published in 2002.
