Last-gasp Lewandowski ends Scottish hopes

Scotland 2-2 Poland

  • Poland sit second in Group D, six points clear of Scots who can no longer advance

Scotland's chances of making UEFA EURO 2016 are over after a 94th-minute equaliser from Robert Lewandowski earned Poland a draw in Glasgow which keeps Adam Nawalka's team second in Group D.

After the Bayern München forward fired the visitors into a third-minute lead, Matt Ritchie and Steven Fletcher goals either side of the interval seemingly brought the hosts back into the qualifying mix. However, Lewandowski scrambled in from close range at the death to put six points between the Poles and the Scots – and wreck the latter's slender hopes of progressing.

Lewandowski: We gave everything

The away team got off to the perfect start with a goal from their captain in the opening moments. Arkadiusz Milik picked out the run of Lewandowski who slotted the ball between David Marshall and his near post for his 30th international strike.

Nawalka's side looked to be in total control until Ritchie brought the hosts back into contention with a spectacular left-footed effort from outside the box that exploded past Łukasz Fabiański on the stroke of half-time.

Fabiański: Lewandowski is on fire

Poland enjoyed the lion's share of possession again after the break but once again they were stunned when Fletcher sent a left-foot curler past Fabiański to leave Gordon Strachan's men on the verge of a priceless win as they sought to end their 18-year exile from major championships.

With ten minutes remaining Łukascz Piszczek blazed over at short range and it appeared Scotland would hold on. That was until the last kick of the game which saw Lewandowski bundle the ball over the line after a Kamil Grosicki free-kick rattled the upright.

Fletcher: We did well to take the lead
