Spain v Luxembourg background

Spain will look to crown their 150th UEFA European Championship game by confirming their place at the 2016 finals, requiring a home victory against Luxembourg to do so.

Spain will seek to complete their passage to the UEFA EURO 2016 finals, with the European champions needing to win either of their remaining matches to secure one of the two Group C top slots.

• Spain lead the section by two points from Slovakia and are certain of at least a play-off berth.

• Luxembourg, the visitors to Logrono on 9 October, can finish no higher than fourth in the section.

Previous meetings
• Diego Costa scored his first international goal and Juan Bernat registered on his debut as Spain overpowered hosts Luxembourg 4-0 in their Group C encounter last October.

• Luxembourg have lost all five of their matches against Spain without scoring; the previous four were all friendly fixtures.

• Current Luxembourg coach Luc Holtz featured as a player in a 1-0 win for Spain over the Luxembourgers on 7 June 2000; however the visitors failed to add to Gaizka Mendieta's second-minute opener.

Form guide
• Spain thrashed Liechtenstein 6-0 in their only previous competitive game in Logrono – a 2011 UEFA European Championship qualifier.

• Spain are unbeaten in 31 home qualifiers (W27 D4), winning their last 16 in the UEFA European Championship since a 1-0 loss to Greece on 7 June 2003.

• Luxembourg have lost their last six competitive away matches. They have not won in 18 away qualifiers (D3 L15) since a shock 2-1 triumph against Switzerland in qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup on 10 September 2008.

Disciplinary
• Diego Costa is suspended for the Luxembourg game; Sergio Busquets and David Silva will incur a ban with their next bookings.

• Chris Philipps is suspended for the Spain game; Dwayn Holter and Daniel Da Mota are a yellow card away from a ban.

Trivia and links
• This is Spain's 150th UEFA European Championship game; their previous 149 ended W96 D27 L26.

• The Logrono fixture is taking place the day after Luxembourg defender Tom Schnell's 30th birthday.

• Spain have won all 14 of their meetings with Luxembourg in UEFA age-group competitions.

• Unsurprisingly, the ten encounters between the nations' clubs in UEFA competition have also all ended in Spanish victories.
