Hungary 'couldn't have played any better'

Coach Bernd Storck said Hungary's 2-0 win against Austria was "like a dream – we couldn't have played any better" while goalscorers Ádám Szalai and Zoltán Stieber also shared their joy.

Bernd Storck, Hungary coach
The team performance was fantastic. We were rewarded for our hard work over the last three weeks. The team did a great job – a great success, a great result, a great match. Bravo!

We wanted it so much. It was a dream and it has come true. For us it was a difficult game from the start. We struggled early on, but then all the players excelled themselves and the second half was fantastic. We couldn't have played better.

Marcel Koller, Austria coach
We started well. David Alaba hit the woodwork early on. But further into the game we got very unsettled and lost our shape. We lost the ball too often and Hungary were able to get hold of it easily. That's why our players had to run a great deal.

We were able to get in behind a couple of times, but we didn't really make the most of our chances. During the second half we played against a strong Hungarian team who used that to their advantage. In the end, we weren't able to recover because we also got a red card and the whole situation became more difficult.

I think we did incredibly well as a team – our defenders and midfielders were terrific at winning the ball back and defending against it, so congratulations to the whole group. Certainly the fact that we scored twice is the best thing of all, but anyone who saw this match and has watched the team in recent months must have seen how well this team play – and how well we played today.

Lacika [László Kleinheisler, who set up Szalai's goal] gave me the ball like we've been doing in training – it was a fantastic ball, perhaps I took it a bit too far, but in the end I made it. At first I looked at the referee to see if it was offside, but when I realised it really was a goal, I was incredibly happy.

Zoltán Stieber, Hungary goalscorer
We're all delighted to be at the European Championship and to have started the tournament with a victory like this. As a child, everyone dreams of qualifying for a major tournament like this one.

Being able to begin with a win is a huge achievement. I'd told my friends I had a good feeling about it. We kept a positive attitude, everyone has been giving their best in training, both mentally and physically. And we succeeded by securing a truly great result for our first match.

It was a wonderful moment when I received the ball from Tamás Priskin. It was a great pass and I focused my mind on finishing it off, which I eventually did.

With a bit of luck that ball would have gone in [in the first minute] and the match would have looked a bit different. We very well and were able to put our plans into action. As I said, if we had been a bit more lucky ...

We had enough opportunities, especially in the first half, to take the lead. That way we would have been more calm. But then the first goal against us was a massive blow.

Hungary didn't have many chances. I think we were the better team, but they were just calm and collected and took their chances. They took the lead and the red card made it even worse for us. It didn't make the game easier.
