Ronaldo revved up after 'insane' Hungary game

Two-goal Cristiano Ronaldo was thrilled to help Portugal set up a last-16 tie with Croatia in an "insane" 3-3 draw with Hungary, whose coach Bernd Storck praised his own "exceptional" team.

This was an insane match. Three times we were going home and we had to chase the result. It was very hot, but we made it through in third place. We wanted to win the group or finish second if possible, but we managed to qualify. I hope we win the next match.

[On scoring in four separate UEFA EUROs] This was another record, but like I always say, that comes naturally. I can't say I'm not happy, but the priority was to get through to the last 16 and now we face a very tough team.

I think the odds are 50-50. Croatia have very good players. It's not every team that manages to beat Spain, so we respect them. But we know our strength, we know our worth, and we'll look them in the eyes.

Fernando Santos, Portugal coach
We wanted to finish in first place – that's what we had in mind, to progress. But not like this. Over these three matches, however, we did more than enough to finish in first place. After the first two matches, I said the team was playing well but couldn't score. Today was the opposite. We managed to attack and managed to score, and had other chances. In terms of defence, we weren't as tight.

Ronaldo: We were out of EURO three times

I just want to praise my players. Three times we were behind to lucky shots and we managed to pull level three times and tried to score a fourth. In the end, Hungary gave up playing. We tried to press, but we knew the most important thing was to qualify.

This is what Cristiano Ronaldo is all about. He has to score because he's a winner. He plays up front and feeds on goals. This game increased his confidence levels. He's a confident and determined player, but this will increase his confidence for the game against Croatia.

Everything is different now. The next match is a final. This match was a final. Until the final final, all we have are finals. We have to fight and sacrifice to win because that's the only way we can win games. I think we'll come out on top in the end.

Croatia are one of the sharks and we tried to avoid them. They came first in a group with Spain and that shows you how strong they are. Look at their players. There's a number of teams who were favourites and a number of teams ambitious enough to go far – and Croatia are one of them. I'm sure we'll face strong opponents and one team will be left behind. I just hope it's not Portugal.

Nani, Portugal forward
It was another hard match, but we have to emphasise the team's excellent attitude. We were behind three times and managed to answer in the best way immediately after their goals. That showed the excellent attitude of a strong team that's psychologically strong and doesn't allow itself to be beaten, even when we're up against it.

Now we have a knockout game. I think everything is going to be different, and we'll start our winning streak. Croatia are very strong, but we came to this EURO with the ambition of wanting to win. In order to win, you have to face any opponent – we have to beat all the teams in our way and we'll start with Croatia.

Bernd Storck, Hungary coach
We're happy that we're in the next round. I knew we'd be playing more defensively than in our first games because Portugal are a great team. With our well-organised defence, we wanted to make the most of transitions. We had a good game and didn't allow Portugal too many chances, but when Ronaldo has the ball he can make the difference. He's a world-class player and a dangerous player and you can't always control him.

I've believed in my team from the beginning. We changed five players. I replaced every player who had a yellow card, and I asked Krisztián Németh to be cautious when he came on. I've always said I have 23 players who are on the same level, and this team performance was exceptional.

We learn from every match. The team is developing from game to game. We're very happy that we showed very good improvement.

We're on a fantastic journey; it's such an experience to take part in this championship and finish first in our group. It means a lot to the team.

The best wine is the oldest one, and the oldest wine is getting better and better, and I'm happy about that. [For the goal] I had a nice memory come to me – a great goal I scored against Liverpool. I hoped I could pull it off again, and I'm very happy that I succeeded.

We're humble. We know it's going to be difficult whoever we play, but it's a huge feeling that more than 20,000 Hungarian people are here to cheer us on, and hundreds of thousands more are supporting us at home. We appreciate it very much. It's a fantastic experience, and we're looking forward to the next match. We can hardly wait to step on to the pitch again.
