Armenia Under-21 and FC Pyunik coach Sargis Hovsepyan has taken the helm of the national team until the end of UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying. The 42-year-old replaces Bernard Challandes who stepped down on 29 March following a 2-1 defeat in Albania, with the former FC Zenit defender taking over a team bottom of Group I with only one point from four matches. Capped a record 132 times by Armenia, Hovsepyan has a tough first task as coach as Portugal visit on 13 June.
Armenia coach Bernard Challandes has stepped down following Sunday's dramatic 2-1 defeat in Albania, a result that left his side bottom of Group I.
"One point in four qualifiers is obviously unsatisfactory regardless of the problems we have had with the squad," said the 63-year-old. "I am not making excuses. We had a challenge to qualify from this group. The challenge has not been met so I quit."
