Santos staying at AEK

AEK Athens FC coach Fernando Santos has withdrawn his resignation and agreed to stay.

AEK Athens FC coach Fernando Santos has agreed to remain at the helm of the club, two days after resigning from his post.

Transfer funding
Santos walked out on Monday amid reports that he was unhappy with AEK's acting general manager Makis Psomiadis after they clashed several times regarding funding for transfers.

Long discussions
The former FC Porto coach, who has led the Athens side to a five-point lead at the top of the Greek league and into the fourth round of the UEFA Cup, was locked in discussions with club officials last night which lasted some seven hours.

Looking to the future
Now, after days of uncertainty, Santos has changed his mind following a public show of support by his players and the club's supporters. "I never had any contact with other clubs and I never intended to leave AEK to work somewhere else," he said. "It is my belief that I will continue at AEK not only for this season but also for next season as well."

Media statement
AEK released a statement saying: "There was a misunderstanding and that is why the coach thought the officials of the club were against him."
