Lorens makes Cypriot switch

Former FC Górnik Zabrze vice president Edward Lorens is the new coach of Anorthosis Famagusta FC.

Anorthosis Famagusta FC have appointed former FC Górnik Zabrze vice-president Edward Lorens as their new coach.

Surprise move
Lorens had been co-operating closely with Górnik coach Waldemar Fornalik over the last few months, and his decision to move to Cyprus to take up a coaching post has come as something of a surprise to his former club.

'We must respect his choice'
"Things happened very fast," said Górnik president Zbigniew Kozminski. "For coach Lorens this is certainly a step up and he will earn more money. We must respect his choice. We will not hire anyone to replace him."

Fellow countrymen
The 48-year-old Lorens had previously worked as assistant to former national team coach Janusz Wojcik at Anorthosis last season. The assistant coach at Anorthosis, Andrzej Czyzniewski, is also Polish and Lorens will have four Polish players in his squad at the Antonis Papadopoulos stadium - Wojciech Kowalczyk, Slawomir Majak, Radoslaw Michalski and Mariusz Piekarski.

Replaces Kosdov
Lorenz, who also counts Pogon Szczecin and KS Ruch Chorzów among his former clubs, will replace Nikolai Kosdov who took over from Wojcik in the middle of last season and led Anorthosis to second place in the league and victory in the Cypriot Cup

Starring role
Two of the Polish players he inherits, Kowalczyk and Piekarski, both played a starring role in Anorthosis's UEFA Cup qualifying round first-leg win against Luxembourg side CS Grevenmacher. The two Polish players scored a goal each as the Cypriot side built up a 3-0 advantage for the second leg.
