Sporting lose patience with Jardel

Sporting Clube de Portugal have suspended their Brazilian international striker Mario Jardel.

Suffering from depression
Jardel, who announced in July that he was suffering from depression, missed a meeting with Sporting's medical staff which had been rescheduled for Thursday lunchtime. He had been due to see the club's doctor and psychiatrist on 22 August and again on Tuesday.

'Contract suspended'
"Thirty days have passed since his first medical certificate was tendered to justify his absence from work, so the contract between Sporting and Mario Jardel is automatically suspended by law," said a club statement.

Marital problem
Jardel revealed his condition at a press conference on 26 July, claiming he was depressed after separating from his wife and being omitted from Brazil's FIFA World Cup finals squad. He was Europe's Golden Shoe winner last season, his 42 goals helping Sporting land a domestic double.
