FC Schalke 04, Villarreal CF and AC Perugia will be in Friday's draw for the first round of the UEFA Cup after winning the three UEFA Intertoto Cup finals completed on Tuesday night.
Mixed fortunes
Schalke were always the likely team to advance from their match against SV Pasching following their 2-0 first-leg victory in Austria a fortnight ago, and the German side progressed by the same aggregate scoreline following tonight's scoreless return in Gelsenkirchen. Another Bundesliga side, VfL Wolfsburg, were eliminated by Perugia, who triumphed 2-0 away to add to their previous 1-0 win in Italy.
Spanish challenge
Villarreal ensured Spain will be represented by four clubs in the UEFA Cup by drawing 0-0 at home to SC Heerenveen - having won 2-1 in the Netherlands a fortnight ago. Primera División sides FC Barcelona and Valencia CF have the highest coefficients in the draw, while RCD Mallorca are also invloved after winning the King's Cup.
Champions League losers
The 16 losing sides in the Champions League third qualifying round will enter the competition in the first round. Rosenborg BK (Norway), Wisla Kraków (Poland), MŠK Žilina (Slovakia) and FK Vardar (F.Y.R Macedonia) were all eliminated on Tuesday and 12 more will follow tomorrow. The eight third-placed teams in the Champions League group stage will join in the third round.
