Kaklamanos punished by Standard

R. Standard de Liège have sacked Alexandros Kaklamanos after the striker tested positive for cocaine.

Contract terminated
The Belgian club terminated the 30-year-old's contract, which was due to run until 2006, with immediate effect after a B sample also revealed traces of the drug.

Disciplinary hearing
Kaklamanos was tested after the First Division match against FC Molenbeek Brussels Strombeek on 28 August. He will now appear before a disciplinary committee of the Belgian Football Association (URBSFA). The player joined Standard in 2003 and scored eight goals in 33 league appearances.

Onyewu signs
There was better news for Standard, who visit FC Steaua Bucuresti in their opening UEFA Cup group stage game on Thursday, when United States international Oguchi Onyewu signed a two-year contract with the club. The 22-year-old defender arrived in Liege on a season's loan from French side FC Metz last summer, but his impressive form has led Standard to make the move permanent.
