Rangers and Alkmaar meet expectations

Group F reaction: Rangers FC boss Alex McLeish was pleased that his players rose to the occasion.

At half-time there was a bit of flatness about the place, which is understandable after the exertions of the weekend [a 2-0 home league win against Celtic FC]. But you've got to hand it to the players, they raised the bar in the second half. We started at breakneck speed and didn't let up till we got the opener. Rangers coach Alex McLeish

It was a difficult first half. They didn't leave us any spaces to create chances, but we stayed patient and in the second half a great ball in from Fernando [Ricksen] and Nacho Novo's finish made it a bit easier for us. In the end we got a second and a third goal, and I think it was a very good performance. Rangers captain Stefan Klos

I felt we held together well until the first goal. We knew how hard it was going to be with a 50,000 crowd, but I don't believe 3-0 was a fair reflection. We had opportunities to score. In the first half we had most of the play, but didn't take our chances. Our tactics were working, but unfortunately, after losing the first goal, Rangers became stronger. If Rangers play their other games like they did the last 15 minutes tonight, they will win the group. GAK coach Walter Schachner

I am sad to say that we have practically said goodbye to the UEFA Cup. We knew Alkmaar were the better team, but we hoped to stand up to them and reduce the gap between the sides. We did not show our full ability because of the fear factor that still affects my players when it comes to playing in Europe. We had some good moments in the second half and that's our hope for the future. Amica coach Maciej Skorza

I am very satisfied. We had a good win today. The first-half performance was great, as we controlled possession even though it was difficult because the pitch was slippery. But our technical skills were better and that is why we created five good chances and scored three goals. In the second half we had problems with Amica's attacking midfielder Marcin Burkhardt, who was getting beyond their strikers and creating added pressure. We didn't play as well, but even so I felt their penalty was a bit hard on us. Alkmaar coach Co Adriaanse
