Babayaro bound for Newcastle

Chelsea FC's Celestine Babayaro will sign for Newcastle United FC when the transfer window opens on 1 January.

Newcastle United FC have confirmed that Chelsea FC's Nigerian international left-back Celestine Babayaro will sign for the club when the transfer window reopens on 1 January.

Trophy success
The 26-year-old, who would have been a free agent at the end of the season, moves for an undisclosed fee. Babayaro, who has won 27 caps for his country and appeared in all three of Nigeria's games at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, made 132 Premiership appearances during seven-and-a-half years at Chelsea and helped the club to victory in the UEFA Super Cup in 1998, also winning the FA Cup and English League Cup with the London side.

European challenge
Babayaro will be available for the remainder of Newcastle's European campaign having not featured during Chelsea's participation in UEFA Champions League Group H. Newcastle, who finished first in UEFA Cup Group D, face SC Heerenveen of the Netherlands in the competition's last 32.
