Athirson arrives at Leverkusen

Bayer 04 Leverkusen have signed Brazilian international left-back Athirson for an undisclosed fee from Cruzeiro EC.

Juventus stint
The 28-year-old arrived in Leverkusen today to put pen to paper on a three-year contract. Capped five times by Brazil, Athirson returns to Europe for a second spell, having played for Juventus FC from 2000-02. He made just five appearances in two Serie A seasons, however, and is best associated with his hometown club CR Flamengo.

Tasty signing
"He will definitely add flavour to the Bundesliga," Bayer manager Wolfgang Holzhäuser said. Sporting director Rudi Völler added: "He guarantees attractive football." Athirson joins compatriots Roque Junior, Juan and Franca at the BayArena.
