Aliuta takes Metalurh chance

FC Metalurh Donetsk have signed Romanian international midfield player Marian Aliuta on a one-year contract.

'Top club'
The 27-year-old returns to Ukraine after a memorable spell with Metalurh's city rivals FC Shakhtar Donetsk, with whom he won a domestic double in 2002. "It did not take me long to accept Metalurh's offer because they are one of the top clubs in Ukraine," said Aliuta, who played 47 league games for Shakhtar.

National service
Aliuta, capped three times by Romania, has also played for FC Farul Constanta, FC Steaua Bucuresti and AFC Rapid Bucuresti as well as spending time abroad with Korean side Chunnam Dragons FC and FC Sheriff in Moldova.

UEFA Cup chance

Metalurh start the Ukrainian season against promoted FC Stal Alchevsk on Tuesday. New coach Aleksandr Sevidov also has one eye on a possible UEFA Cup campaign. Metalurh will enter the competition's second qualifying round, with the first leg to be played on 11 August.
