Scan changes Opdam prognosis

AZ Alkmaar's Barry Opdam could be fit in time to face Middlesbrough FC on 24 November after scans revealed that a knee injury was less serious than expected.

Knee injury
The 29-year-old defender hurt his right knee in Sunday's Eredivisie game against Willem II and it was initially feared the injury would keep him out for several months. However, a scan has shown he has only strained a ligament, and he is now expected back sooner.

Individual training
Indeed, the Dutch international has already returned to light training. "I hope to be back on the pitch soon and hope to be able to train with the squad within two weeks," he said. AZ won their opening UEFA Cup Group D match 2-1 at FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk.
