Bordeaux look to Cavenaghi's goals

FC Girondins de Bordeaux have lured 23-year-old Argentinian striker Fernando Cavenaghi - a former Russian record signing - from FC Spartak Moskva.

FC Girondins de Bordeaux have signed Argentinian striker Fernando Cavenaghi from FC Spartak Moskva for an undisclosed fee.

Russian record
Cavenaghi, whose transfer to Spartak from CA River Plate in 2004 had cost the European club a reported €10m fee, arrives at Bordeaux on a four-and-a-half year contract. According to Ricardo Gomes, the Marine et Blanc coach, the newcomer "is a very good player who had a lot of admirers". "He has great technical abilities and reminds me a little of Marco Simone [the former AC Milan forward]," Gomes added.

Goalscorer
The 23-year-old Cavenaghi, an Italian passport holder, scored 55 goals in 88 games for River Plate before the switch to Spartak, where his 51 Premier-Liga appearances yielded a more modest 12 goals. He played once in the UEFA Champions League this season. His new team, who lie eighth in France's Ligue 1, will face CA Osasuna in the UEFA Cup Round of 32 next month.
