Juande Ramos has been officially appointed as manager of Tottenham Hotspur FC 24 hours after leaving his previous post as Sevilla FC coach.

Wednesday bow
The 53-year-old's contract runs until the end of the 2010/11 season and he takes over from Martin Jol, who was sacked after Thursday's 2-1 UEFA Cup defeat by Ramos's former Primera División rivals Getafe CF. Caretaker Clive Allen will remain in charge for Sunday's Premier League fixture against Blackburn Rovers FC, as Spurs aim to escape the bottom three, and Ramos and his former Sevilla assistant Marcos Álvarez will be on the Tottenham bench on Wednesday in the League Cup tie against Blackpool FC. Spurs have also requested permission from Leeds United AFC to speak to Gus Poyet about joining their coaching team.

UEFA Cup successes
Ramos led a number of Spanish clubs before his appointment at Sevilla in 2005. In his two full seasons in charge he twice won the UEFA Cup - beating Spurs in the 2006/07 quarter-finals - as well as tasting success in the UEFA Super Cup, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup. This season Sevilla are competing in the UEFA Champions League for the first time after a third-placed finish last term, but Ramos will now aim for a UEFA Cup hat-trick despite Tottenham's losing start to their Group G fixtures, which continue at Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC on 8 November. Manolo Jiménez has taken over from Ramos at Sevilla.

'Tradition and history'
"I greatly appreciate the opportunity to work at Tottenham Hotspur, a club with a great tradition and history," Ramos said. "Ever since I started my coaching career I have wanted to work in England." Tottenham sporting director Damien Comolli added: "He brings with him a wealth of experience, a proven track record and a winning pedigree."
