Wendel wins it for Bordeaux

FC Girondins de Bordeaux have one foot in the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup after coming from behind to win at FK Austria Vienna.

Early goal
The French club won their opening Group H match 2-1 at home to Galatasaray AS a fortnight ago, and knew a victory in Vienna would put them on the brink of qualification. Their chances of success appeared slim when the hosts went ahead after just five minutes through Saniel Kuljic but Laurent Blanc's team showed great character to turn things round thanks to goals from Marouane Chamakh and Wendel, the second an 88th-minute penalty.

Parity restored
Austria showed their intent with barely 60 seconds gone as Fernando Troyansky directed a decent chance at Bordeaux goalkeeper Ulrich Ramé. The home crowd did not have to wait too long for the opener, however, as Kuljic met Milenko Ačimovič's indirect free-kick at the near post and flicked in a header. Troyansky slotted wide when well positioned for Austria five minutes before the interval, and was soon made to pay for that miss.

Wendel chances
Johan Micoud provided the cross from the right channel and Chamakh connected with a shot into the bottom-left corner. Wendel came close to firing Bordeaux ahead in the 51st minute but saw his long-range free-kick parried by Szabolcs Safar. He then had a shot blocked by Troyansky before twice firing wide from distance, while Safar was finally tested in the 80th minute and proved his worth with a brilliant save with his feet to deny Chamakh.

Sariyar suspended
The Hungarian goalkeeper was powerless to prevent his side going 2-1 down two minutes from time though, as Wendel picked himself up after being felled by Jacek Bąk and made no mistake with the penalty. Austria's night got worse when Yüksel Sariyar picked up a booking in added time which earns him a suspension at Helsingborgs IF on 29 November.
