Aberdeen curse concentration lapse

Manager Jimmy Calderwood and goalscorer Alexander Diamond both rued the concentration lapse which cost Aberdeen FC a first group stage victory on Thursday.

Aberdeen FC manager Jimmy Calderwood and goalscorer Alexander Diamond both rued the concentration lapse which cost them a first victory in UEFA Cup Group B as they were held to a 1-1 draw by FC Lokomotiv Moskva at Pittodrie.

'Stupid goal'
Diamond had headed his side in front but an equaliser right on the half-time whistle from Branislav Ivanović denied the home team a much-needed win. "It feels like a defeat," admitted Calderwood. "We got the goal and they weren't causing us too many problems. Then we gave a stupid goal away just before half-time. Concentration levels have to be high in European football but we're making expensive mistakes and it's costing us big time. If we had gone in 1-0 ahead at half-time it could have been completely different."

'Learning curve'
"It's a learning curve for us," added the manager, whose side were comprehensively beaten 3-0 at Panathinaikos FC in their first game in the group. "I know we can play better - and that's two games now where I'm saying this. Our passing wasn't good enough - you need to be quicker at this level and we usually are."

Qualification possible
Diamond was equally frustrated but still feels qualification is not beyond them. "The goal just before half-time knocked the stuffing out of us," he said. "It took us a wee bit of time to get going again but we're still in there with a chance. Three teams went through last season with four points. The [Club Atlético de] Madrid game takes care of itself and the final game here against FC København will be massive."
