A decade has passed since Rosenborg BK last met Club Brugge KV, but fans and players from both clubs are unlikely to have forgotten the lively second qualifying round encounter which saw the Norwegian side progress to the 1998/99 UEFA Champions League group stage on away goals.

• Sigurd Rushfeldt and Bent Skammelsrud scored in Trondheim to put Trond Sollied's side 2-0 up in the tie ahead of the return leg in Bruges.

• The teams that night were:
Rosenborg: Jørn Jamtfall, André Bergdølmo, Erik Hoftun, Bjørn Otto Bragstad, Roar Strand, Runar Berg, Jan Derek Sørenson (Tore André Dahlum), Sigurd Rushfeldt, Bent Skammelsrud, Ole Christer Basma, Børge Hernes (Andreas Mayer).
Club Brugge: Dany Verlinden, Eric Deflandre, Aleksandar Ilić, Vital Borkelmans, Franky Van der Elst, Elonga Ekakia, Gert Claessens (Ebrima Sillah), Tjorven De Brul, Sven Vermant, Gunter Verjans (Koen Schockaert), Eric Addo (Edgaras Jankauskas).

• Erik Gerets's Brugge almost completed a heroic fight-back in the return leg. Khalilou Fadiga put them ahead, but Rushfeldt equalised before the break. Gert Claessens then made it 2-1 on the night only for Rushfeldt to level again with 18 minutes remaining.

• Substitute Koen Schockaert and Claessens then scored a goal apiece within five minutes to leave the Belgian side 4-2 up but needing one more goal to progress. It did not come, and Rosenborg went through on away goals.

• Both midfielder Roar Strand and defender Ole Christer Basma are still playing for Rosenborg now, while the Norwegian side's goalkeeper in the matches – Jørn Jamtfall – is the father of current Rosenborg forward Michael Jamtfall.

• Rosenborg have played eight games against Belgian sides in total, winning two, drawing one and losing five. Of four home games against teams from Belgium, they have won two, drawn one and lost one.

• Club Brugge have also played eight games against Norwegian sides. Their record in those matches reads won four, drawn one, lost three. In Norway they have won one, drawn one and lost two.

• Brugge were denied a place in last season's UEFA Cup group stage by Rosenborg's league rivals SK Brann. Jacky Mathijssen's men won 1-0 in the first leg in Bergen but lost 2-1 at home to miss out on away goals.

• Fifth in Norway last season, Rosenborg qualified for the final UEFA Intertoto Cup, beating FK Ekranas and then NAC Breda to emerge as one of the eleven winners of the final edition of the summer competition.

• They then beat Sweden's Djurgårdens IF and Denmark's Brøndby IF to reach the group stage for the first time.

• Third in last season's Eerste Klasse, Club Brugge progressed straight to the first round of the UEFA Cup, where victory against BSC Young Boys of Switzerland earned them a third stab at the group stage.

• They qualified for the group stage in 2004/05 and 2006/07 but on both occasions failed to progress to the knockout phase.

• FC København take on AS Saint-Etienne in Matchday 1's other Group G game. Valencia CF are the only side in the section not in action on 23 October.
