Manchester City FC will take on Sporting Clube de Portugal while Valencia CF will play PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Europa League round of 16 after the last-32 ties concluded on Thursday night.

With the draws for both the round of 32 and the round of 16 made at the same time in December, the victors already know their opponents next month. City ended FC Porto's trophy defence in the sole game played on Wednesday and their reward is a meeting with another Portuguese side, Sporting, who came through against Legia Warszawa 3-2 on aggregate.

Manchester United FC survived a scare at Old Trafford, with Toby Alderweireld scoring late to give AFC Ajax a 2-1 win on the night. However, a 2-0 first-leg triumph meant Sir Alex Ferguson's team set up an engagement with Athletic Club, who advanced on away goals against FC Lokomotiv Moskva despite being down to ten men.

Both PSV and Valencia enjoyed relatively comfortable passages against less experienced rivals on the European stage. The Dutch outfit were 4-1 victors over Trabzonspor AŞ, who also had a player sent off, while Unai Emery's charges collected a second 1-0 success against Stoke City FC.

The club PSV share the Eredivisie lead with, AZ Alkmaar, also progressed after winning 1-0 at RSC Anderlecht, eliminating the only side that had a perfect record in the group stage. They will face Udinese Calcio, who matched their biggest margin of victory in Europe with a 3-0 defeat of PAOK FC.

After doing most of the hard work last week, Club Atlético de Madrid finished the job against S.S. Lazio, prevailing 1-0 to complete a 4-1 overall success. Midfielder Arda Turan, who was born in Istanbul, will be especially looking forward to their next tie, against Turkey's Beşiktaş JK.

After knocking out Club Brugge KV, Hannover 96 encounter another Belgian opponent in R. Standard de Liège while FC Twente play FC Schalke 04, who survived the only tie to go to extra time, against FC Viktoria Plzeň. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar completed a hat-trick to stamp their ticket.
