Matchday one facts and figures

• Napoli, the 2014/15 semi-finalists, made the best start of the 48 teams in the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League, defeating Club Brugge 5-0 in Naples. It was the tenth 5-0 win registered in the competition, Napoli becoming the 37th team to score five or more goals in a game.

• The result at the Stadio San Paolo was all the more surprising given that Club Brugge are the most experienced UEFA Europa League group stage campaigners in this season's field. The match in Naples was the Belgian side's 31st in the group phase. Only PSV Eindhoven (36) have contested more.

• The goalless draw between Lech Poznań and Belenenses was the 100th in the UEFA Europa League, the 99th having come earlier in the evening between Qäbälä and PAOK. There have also now been 100 fixtures finishing 2-1 to the home team. The competition's most common scoreline is 1-1, which has occurred on 142 occasions, including four on matchday one.

• Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's double for Schalke in their 3-0 victory at APOEL took his UEFA Europa League tally to 12 goals, 18 behind the competition's top marksman Radamel Falcao. However, with those two goals the Dutch striker moved ahead of the Colombian into second place in the combined all-time goalscorer listings of UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League (qualifying rounds included). Huntelaar now has 32, to Falcao's 31, with only Henrik Larsson (40) ahead of him.

• There were mixed results for the eight UEFA Europa League newcomers on matchday one, with just Sion (2-1 against Rubin Kazan) and Midtjylland (1-0 against Legia) marking their debuts with a win. Conversely, Groningen, Skënderbeu and Augsburg all fell to defeat while there were draws for Qäbälä, Belenenses and Monaco.

• Skënderbeu are the first Albanian club to compete in the UEFA Europa League group stage, bringing the total number of UEFA member associations to have been involved in the competition proper up to 37 (out of 54). Finland, Latvia, Kazakhstan and the Republic of Ireland have all provided just one participant.

• Jorge Jesus, who led Benfica to back-to-back UEFA Europa League finals, got off to an inauspicious start as coach of Sporting CP, as the Lisbon side's competition-record run of 20 consecutive home matches without defeat came to a halt with a 3-1 loss against Lokomotiv Moskva.

• There was a happier end to another record sequence as Serbian champions Partizan avoided a 13th successive UEFA Europa League game without a win by overcoming AZ Alkmaar 3-2 in Belgrade. They currently share the record jointly with Slovan Bratislava.

• Molde caused one of the upsets of the night by beating Fenerbahçe 3-1 in Istanbul, and their captain, Daniel Berg Hestad, became only the seventh player to appear in a UEFA Europa League fixture over the age of 40. At 40 years and 49 days he is, however, some way short of the record held by American goalkeeper Brad Friedel (42 years and 173 days). The oldest outfield player to have featured is Scotsman David Weir at 40 years and 283 days.
