Blagoy Georgiev's deflected shot rescued Rubin, the Russian club going on to win 2-0 after struggling to break down ten-man Sion in UEFA Europa League Group B.

With snow falling and time running out, Rubin tore into Sion from the off; Georgiev volleyed off target early on with Andris Vaņins's goal gaping, and Magomed Ozdoev and Ruslan Kambolov also went close. It took until the 31 minutes for Sion to create a meaningful chance, Moussa Konaté bending one just wide not long before Birama Ndoye picked up a second yellow card for a late chop at Maksim Kanunnikov.

Vladimir Dyadyun came on at the break as Rubin raised the temperature further and drew a splendid diving save from Vaņins, who pushed his header against the foot of his left-hand post. The striker powered a second header against the crossbar on 59 minutes as Rubin moved in for the kill, yet when Carlos Eduardo snatched at another opportunity with 20 minutes to go, the hosts may have felt their luck was out.

However, salvation swiftly arrived, Georgiev's long-range effort looping over Vaņins after taking a significant deflection off a defender, and Rubin ended the game on a high. Marko Dević smashed in a second goal after collecting Diniyar Bilyaletdinov's ball in from the touchline at the death.
